Post District
Neighborhood Naming

Problem
Salt Lake City has very long blocks, and a developer was looking to create a whole new gateway into the downtown area between 300 to 400 West and 500 to 600 South. Yeah, a whole square block in downtown SLC, plus just a tad bit more to the North. How do you respect some of the history of the space, and create a sense of community without it feeling forced or phony? It all starts with research and a dash of good storytelling.
Solution & Impact
After diving in to look at both the history of the area, including the plans to renovate the old Newspaper Agency Corporation building as well as copious fruitful conversations with the developing partners a few select options were chosen to present, and Post District was born.
A name that takes into consideration our city’s roots are as a frontier outpost—and is still a place of gathering, commerce, and trade. A place of iindependence and free thought.
In later years, our location was site of a newspaper printer—which gives the word “post” extra weight and meaning in our story.
Altogether, Post District arises and takes its own shape, rooted in history and looking toward our future frontier.
What starts with an appreciation of the history of downtown mixed with the opportunity to create community and future history in Salt Lake City, makes for a once in a lifetime naming project.
